Abstract:
Application of methyl jasmonate (JA-Me) together with ACC greatly accelerated gum formation in tulip stem in comparison to JA-Me treatment alone.
Histological studies of tulip stem during different stages of gum formation induced by methyl jasmonate with interaction of ACC in comparison to the control stem were made.
Transversal and longitudinal sections of stem were stained with periodic acid-Schiff's reagent (PAS), ruthenium red, safranin-fast green, and Sudan III. The dissolution of cell wall of epidermis, cortex and pith cells were observed and finally gum ducts of different size are formed.
The degradation products of cell wall and protoplasts seems to contribute to the gum exudates production.
Important role in gum secretion to gum ducts play also laticifers.
The destructive processes of cell wall was not observed in the vascular bundles occurring in pith part of stem.
The mechanism of physiological action of methyl jasmonate in induction of gummosis in the tulip stem is unknown.
