CURRENT USES OF PLASTIC FILMS IN HORTICULTURE |

| Abstract:
A significant growth in the consumption of plastic materials in horticulture can be measured over the past ten years, particularly in very sunny areas. It is estimated that in western Europe, more than 180.000 tons were used in 1973 for horticultural applications (growing techniques only). The average annual growth rate of more than 20 % is explained by economical, technical and human reasons. In recent years it has become possible to define the specific uses of these materials, and mulching is certainly the best example. Furthermore, a better understanding of the properties of these materials has led not only to improved performances (films of 2 to 3 years durability), but also to special film formulations with special effects as :
All these results justify the current name now given for this new science : "PLASTICULTURE". | |
