ISHS Acta Horticulturae 43: Symposium on Cultivation of Flowers under Protection in the Mediterranean Regions

EXTRACTION AND IDENTIFICATION OF FLAVONOID PIGMENTS IN MEDITERRANEAN VARIETIES OF DIANTHUS CARYOPHYLLUS

Author:   M. Vidal
Abstract:
Among the varieties of red-coloured Dianthus caryophyllus, the variety Carmen stands out for the tonality and brilliance of its petals. Its pigments having been extracted and identified, it was found that they were derived from Pelargonidin and Kaemferol. The american variety Red Sim has the same pigments, but nevertheless lacks the special brilliance of Carmen. The colouring does not depend exclusively on the pigments; the effects of co-pigmentation or (and) of petals epidermis micromorphology, also have an influence.
