BREAKING DORMANCY OF GLADIOLUS CORMS AND INHIBITORS INDUCING DORMANCY

Author:   Y. Tsukamoto
Abstract:
Soaking in benzyladenine solution at 20 ppm for 24 hours, followed three days later by resoaking in gibberellin solution at 100 ppm, resulted in a breaking of dormancy in gladiolus corms and in a good growth of shoot and root after sprouting. There are three groups of inhibitors in the ethyl acetate soluble acidic fraction of methanolic extract from corms. These are abscisic acid, a fatty-acid-like substance and some phenolic compounds. The combined solution of ABA and some phenolic compounds induces dormancy in cormlets more effectively then ABA or a phenolic compound alone.
