EVOLUTION ET PERSPECTIVES DE DEVELOPPEMENT DES CULTURES FLORALES PROTEGEES DE LA ZONE MEDITERRANEENNE FRANÇAISE

Abstract:
Following an historical account of the development of flower production in the French Mediterranean littoral, the author points out the marked increase from 1968 to 1973 in the acreage covered - now 1564 hectares, with 1700 hectares expected for 1975. The increase has been continuous, both for glazed shelters and plastic covers.

The predominant increase is in the growing of roses and carnations. The acreage extension parallels the development of the protecting structures and systems. The traditional family undertakings are giving place to modern semi-industrial organisations. The following trends towards specialisation meet economic needs:

Lowering of production costs
Optimum norms to be attained, such as:
- 50 roses a year per square metre under glass
- 20 carnations per square metre under plastic cover
- 18 flowers per stock of gerbera under composite glasshouse

A permanent modernisation, a technical evolution and quality control are the short-term objectives for the total production that, with 30 000 tons of flowers marketable in 1975, should be over 180 million roses, 650 milion carnations and 80 million other flowers, to give a turnover of 280 million N.F.
