ISHS Acta Horticulturae 43: Symposium on Cultivation of Flowers under Protection in the Mediterranean Regions

INFLUENCE OF PLANTING DATE AND DENSITY OF MOTHER PLANTS ON PRODUCTION OF CARNATION CUTTINGS UNDER PROTECTION IN RIVIERA LIGURE

Author:   E. Garibaldi Accati
Abstract:
The carnation is the most important and popular Italian flower crop. The acreage has increased rapidly, reaching 3500 ha with a production higher than 80 millions dollars. The most important phase of the commercial production of carnations is the group of operations referred to as propagation.

As there are in Italy some firms specialized in producing rooted cuttings we carried out one experimental trial in heated glasshouse in order to study the influence on production of cuttings, of different densities of mother plants (34.6; 51.3; 63.3; 91.0 plants/m2) of cv. "White Sim", and different times of planting (August, September, October and November). The correlation between production of cuttings and environmental factors has also been investigated.

The data collected were number, fresh and dry weight, length of cuttings produced; on some samples chlorophyll analysis was carried out.
