ISHS Acta Horticulturae 43: Symposium on Cultivation of Flowers under Protection in the Mediterranean Regions

PREFACE

Author:   J. Cardús
Abstract:
On the occasion of the ISHS International Congress, the Protected Cultivation Commission, mindful of the possibilities of incorporating the countries of Southern Europe into its activities and counting on the collaboration of the Section for Ornamental Plants, asked us to organize a symposium on protected floral cultivation to be held in Barcelona. Naturally we were very pleased to accept the invitation.

Subsequently, and with the assistance of the Section for Vegetables and Ornamental Plants and the Commissions for Horticultural Engineering and Economics, it was agreed at a meeting held in Paris in November 1971, attended by the Secretary General of the ISHS, Dr. de Bakker and the chairmen of the previously mentioned sections and commissions, to hold two symposia. The first would be held in Barcelona from 23 to 27 April 1973 and the second in Avignon from 2 to 5 May with the respective titles of "Cultivation of flowers under Protection in Mediterranean Regions" and "Cultivation of Vegetables under Protection in Mediterranean Regions".

The topics discussed in the first of these symposia and the object of this volume of ACTA HORTICULTURAE were the following:

  • STRUCTURES, EQUIPMENT, CLIMATE OF SHELTERS SUITABLE FOR FLOWERS AND VEGETABLES GROWING IN THE MEDITERRANEAN REGIONS
  • VARIETAL DIVERSIFICATION OF FLOWER SPECIES FOR GROWING UNDER PROTECTION IN THE MEDITERRANEAN REGIONS
  • ECONOMIC PROBLEMS OF PROTECTED CULTIVATION IN THE MEDITERRANEAN, MARKET REQUIREMENTS
  • PHYSIOLOGY AND NUTRITION OF CUT FLOWERS AND PLANTS, CONDITIONING AND TRANSPORT OF FLOWERS

Each topic was introduced by a paper presented by an invited guest, following which discussion was invited relating to the subject.

This symposium was very well attended, the number of participants was 120, including the guest speakers. Seventeen countries were represented.

The inaugural session was presided over by Mr.José Lostao, representing the Spanish Minister of Agriculture. Other speakers were Mr.Cánovas, representative of the Mayor of Barcelona, Professor Lecrenier, chairman of the Commission for Protected Cultivation, Mr. van Onsem, chairman of the Section for Ornamental Plants and ourselves.

The introductory papers were presented by Mr. Nisen and Mr.Benoit, Mr.Berninger, Mr. Garnaud and Professor Halevy.

Professor Lecrenier, Mr.H.C.Ruck, Mr.Santos Caffarena and Professor Folley acted as chairmen of the work sessions. The attainment of the objectives of the Symposium and its scientific merit are due in no small measure to the excellent work of the speakers and other participants, and I wish to express my gratitude to them.

We wish also to express our thanks for the untiring moral and material help we received from the Instituto Nacional Investigaciones Agrarias, the Consejo Superior Investigaciones Cientificas, the University, the City Hall and the Municipality of Barcelona and all the Spanish authorities who attended the Honorary Symposium of the Commission, and especially His Excellency the Minister of Agriculture, who accepted the invitation to preside over it.

To all of you, authorities, speakers and participants, thank you very much.

J. Cardús
Chairman of the Symposium
