Abstract:
In this study, cut flowers of Alstroemeria cv. "Ostara" were harvested when one or two of the primary flowers were open.
Half of the flowers were pre-treated with 4% sucrose + 4mM silverthiosulphate (STS), while the other half were left untreated.
The flowers that were taken out of storage within 10 days of first being treated were examined with regard to weight loss (%), respiration rate (mgCO2/kgh), water soluble solids (%), and vase life (days).
As a result of the study, pretreatment with 4% sucrose + 4mM silverthiosulphate (STS) increased vase life and decreased weight loss and the respiration rate of flowers.
