Abstract:
Since 1989/90, all former socialist countries of Eastern Europe, including Hungary, are in a transition from socialism to capitalism.
This study investigates the results of privatization in Hungarian horticulture on fruit and vegetable production from 1986 to 1994. It discusses the difficult problems that have developed, and gives some reasons for stagnation of production.
Some of the problems incude a reduction in the number of employers in horticulture, stagnation in the production of fruits and vegetables, a decrease in horticultural production, and stagnation in yields of fruits and vegetables.
There has also been a decrease in efficiency in the production process.
Many new farms have developed during privatization, and the opening of agricultural sectors continues.
The most important and common problem that arises after privatization is the lack of capital.
Also, the network of information systems and consulting structures is not well developed.
Stagnation has caused changes in the import, export, and home markets.
In the future, liquidity and efficiency in these markets needs to be developed.
