Author:   G. Abate

Abstract:
Examination of the level of extension contact and farmers' knowledge on various farming practices is an important step for analyzing the effectiveness of the extension system to raise productivity at the farm level. This article utilizes farm survey data to assess the level of extension contact and farmers' knowledge on cropping practices in the smallholder sector dominated with the production of horticultural crops. The analysis showed a lower level of extension contact and insignificant participation of farmers in visits to various demonstration and trial centers. An analysis of farmers' knowledge on a series of recommended practices also showed that the rates of knowledge diffusion in the study area are not satisfactory. The findings in general suggest that the existing extension system in the study area is less successful in delivering information to the smallholder farmers.
