DEMAND AND SUPPLY FACTORS ON THE MARKET FOR ORGANIC VEGETABLES: THE CASE OF SWEDEN

Author:   L. Ekelund Axelson
Keywords:   Ecological production, Consumer attitudes, Growers' decisions
Abstract:
Consumers show a growing interest in organic products and demand is increasing. The most important motive is a concern for health, but the importance of concern for the environment increasing. The organic label KRAV is well known and recognized. Price is the limiting factor, and also sometimes the lack of products in the shops. The supermarkets, wanting to satisfy consumer needs, show an increasing demand for KRAV products. Politicians give subsidies to organic production on the national and on the European Union level. Scientists and producers are skeptical about organic production, claiming lack of superiority of products and preferences for integrated production, thus opposing the view of consumers, middlemen, and politicians. The paper discusses methodological difficulties to the economist in dealing with this market.
