ADAPTATION TO COMPETITION AND STRUCTURAL CHANGE IN FLORIDA'S ORNAMENTAL PLANT NURSERY INDUSTRY, 1989 TO 1994

Abstract:
Florida's large ornamental plant nursery industry has undergone significant structural changes during the latter 1980s and 1990s in response to slowed market growth and increasing competition. Information from industry surveys for fiscal years 1989 and 1994 was used to evaluate these economic trends. Responses to mailed questionnaires were received from 104 firms in 1989 and 183 firms in 1994. Results showed that the industry is evolving toward larger firms, with increasing diversity of ornamental plant products, wider distribution to more distant markets accompanied by greater seasonality of sales, and a shift in wholesale outlets from landscapers to retailers.
