MODELLING ON THE GROWTH AND N UPTAKE OF LEEK AND BROCCOLI

Abstract:
A model of daily plant growth and N-uptake based on relative growth rate (RGR) is suggested. Included in the model are plant senescence and the following environmental factors: radiation, air temperature, soil moisture and content of mineral nitrogen in soil. These factors influence the RGR by means of a response parameter, which can vary from 0 (minimum) to 1 (maximum or optimum).

The model was validated by using data for fresh mass growth of leek [Allium porrum] and broccoli [Brassica oleracea] provided by the gamma-Scanning method during the vegetation period 1993. Predictions of the growth of leek and broccoli for 1994 show it is possible to use this model for the simulation of the asymmetrical plant growth (for leek) and growth of plants harvested in the main phase of the growth (for broccoli). To improve prediction of plant growth it is necessary to include the potential plant yield at harvest in the model and to optimise the environmental response functions.
