ISHS Acta Horticulturae 428: Ecological aspects of Vegetable Fertigation in Integrated crop Production in the Field

IMPROVED N EFFICIENCY IN VEGETABLE PRODUCTION BY FERTILIZER PLACEMENT AND IRRIGATION

Author:   J. Sørensen
Keywords:   cauliflower, leek, nitrogen recovery, nitrogen uptake, onion
Abstract:
With the aim of increasing the N uptake efficiency in vegetable crops, experiments with nitrogen placement and irrigation were conducted. Placement of nitrogen for transplanted cauliflowers significantly increased the N uptake efficiency compared with broadcast nitrogen. However, despite their shallow rooting, placement of nitrogen for directly sown leeks and onions did not significantly improve the N uptake efficiency. Placement of phosphorus along with nitrogen significantly increased onion growth rate and N uptake. The positive effect of N placement to transplanted cauliflowers can be explained by a high demand for plant available nitrogen shortly after plant establishment. Drought stress during growth of leeks significantly depressed plant production, N uptake, and N uptake efficiency.
