Abstract:
The rate of leaf water loss (RLWL) was measured in excised leaves of table and wine grapes (Vitis vinifera) grown in a rainfed environment (Southern Italy). Variation of RLWL along the shoot was detected.
Young and fully expanded leaves, preferably with the same SPAD value, were suggested for a better determination of the RLWL. Variability in table and wine grape cultivars was observed for RLWL and other characters sensitive to water stress (shoot growth, leaf senescence); no significant correlation was found among these parameters.
A multiple character selection approach and a target environment are suggested for screening grape genotypes in rainfed environments.
