Abstract:
Leaf gas exchange was measured on single shoots of pot-grown grapevine plants cv.
Freisa, exposed to high (1400 μmol m-2 s-1) or low (150 μmol m-2 s-1) irradiance.
Measurements were conducted on leaves located along the shoot.
On the same leaves, chlorophyll and protein content were measured.
Net photosynthesis was lowest in young and in old leaves at both high and low light intensity.
Young and old leaves also had lower stomatal conductance.
The substomatal CO2 concentration was not independent of leaf age, as one would expect if photosynthesis were entirely limited by stomatal opening.
Protein and chlorophyll content per unit leaf area showed maximum values for 20 – 30 days old leaves.
This pattern was in agreement with the hypothesis of a primarily non-stomatal nature of photosynthetic limitations.
