INDUCED POLYPLOIDY IN LAVENDER

Authors:   R. Tsevtkov Raev, R. Jordanov, V. Zheljazkov
Abstract:
Induced polyploidy is an efficient method for increasing the yields of essential oil and medicinal plants. For more than ten years, we conducted several experiments in this area in order to obtain some new, more productive varieties of lavender. Three polypoidy techniques were used to develop a breeding material: the Rabotyagov technique, the "pad" technique, and the vegetation cone-soaking technique. The efficiency of different colchicine doses were compared also. From numerous clones obtained, 44 promising clones of Lavandula vera D.C. have been tested. The changes in the plant type depending on the initial genotype were pointed out. A characterisation has been made of the lavender essential oil in comparison with the Bulgarian State Standard (BSS). Correlative dependencies between the biometric indices and the productive qualities of the clones have been established.
