SCREENING OF NATURAL PRODUCTS FOR ANTILEISHMANIAL CHEMOTHERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL

Authors:   N. N. Khan, Linda L. Nolan
Keywords:   Leishmaniasis, DNA polymerase, alfalfa, chamomile, rosemary, thyme, thymol, carvacrol
Abstract:
The discovery of effective drugs for the treatment of protozoal diseases infecting mankind represents one of the last unconquered frontiers in drug discovery. Even when significant progress is made, as in the treatment of bacterial infections, resistant, highly pathogenic organisms can appear. Therefore, the search for novel therapeutic agents is imperative. The myriad of structurally diverse compounds found in nature offers a unique source for drug discovery. We have identified unique enzymes (DNA synthetic) in the leishmanial parasite which offer potential targets for chemotherapeutic exploitation with natural products. Several in vitro unique radioactive enzyme Micro assays were developed and tested for inhibition by known antimicrobial natural products which demonstrated varying degrees of inhibition in out test system.
