Abstract:
This International Symposium on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants was organized under the auspices of the International Horticultural Society to bring together those interested in the cultivation, commerce, pharmacogical and food aspects of medicinal and aromatic plants.
Oral and poster presentations focused on bioactive plants and plant products, pharmaceutical properties, improving foods, natural pest control, molecular biology, and production.
The format was purposely made flexible to entice discussion among the multidisciplinary attendees.
The Symposium was attended by over 100 scientists from 24 countries, representing Europe, Asia, Africa, and North and South America.
Our thanks go to these fellow scholars whose participation made the Symposium such a success.
In this volume, 72 papers, exemplifing a cross-section of the 33 oral and 59 poster presentations, are compiled.
Each paper included in this volume was reviewed by members of the program committee to ensure consistency in style and meaning.
By definition and tradition, symposiums are occasions where an exchange of ideas occur.
This Symposium honored that tradition through a program filled with opportunities to share and learn.
Organized field trips were used to introduce attendees to medicinal and aromatic plant production practices in the Northeastern section of the United States.
Evening workshops were scheduled for extended discussions about library resources, new products and markets, and germplasm preservation.
Members of the Organizing Committee and the Program Committee hope that this volume of Acta Horticulturae will be valuable to you as a reference on world progress in the botany, horticulture, and pharmacology of medicinal and aromatic plants.
