Abstract:
Individuals of ‘Red Spanish’ pineapples selected from previous experiments of somaclonal variation and gamma irradiation by60 Co were characterized by morphological and physiological plant and fruit parameters and cytogenetic as well as isoenzymatic and histological techniques.
Individuals P3R5 by its few spines and E1 by its dwarfness appeared morphologically different, both showing differences for various indexes in their leaf histology with respect to the original variety, but their chromosome number remained equal to 50. The P3R5 clone did not show any difference in electrophoresis pattern with respect to ‘Red Spanish’, whilst E1 had different electrophoretic bands for the three tested isoenzymatic systems, corroborating its character of genetic mutant.
The high heterozygosis of the pineapple species was also demonstrated.
