Abstract:
The South of Vietnam introduced the pineapple crop (‘Queen’ varieties) from the 16th century.
However, the breakthrough of the pineapple production in Vietnam started in 1936–1937 with the introduction of ‘Smooth Cayenne’ and the establishment of some pineapple processing factories in the Saigon area.
As a result, a number of pineapple growing places were set up and remained until now.
The highest area under pineapple production in Vietnam was recorded at 43,000 ha in 1988. The area declined rapidly after 1989. It was just 23,680 ha in 1993.- Constraints : (I) In the South of Vietnam pineapple is grown only on acid sulfate soils (pH 3–3.5) which face a severe drought during the dry season (Nov-April) and are flooded during the wet season (May-Oct.).- (II) The number of successive harvesting cycles is 5–7 per planting.- (III) The planting materials are very diverse.- (IV) The proper amount of lime and inorganic fertilizer doses have to be experimented.- (V) The spacing applied is wide (10000–15000 shoots/ha).- (VI) The very low price of pineapple, and the problem of very limiting market for the canned pineapple products are to be solved.- However there is a good prospect for pineapple production in Vietnam if the following suggested measures are considered : (I) Upgrading of the pineapple canning factories in the South.- (II) Offerring better prices to pineapple growers. (III) Better cultural practices, plant protection measures, varieties and better mandating policy to be introduced, developed and transferred to farmers.
