ISHS Acta Horticulturae 424: II International Rose Symposium

PRACTICAL METHOD FOR OVERCOMING SHOOT SENESCENCE AND DIFFICULTIES WITH ROOTING OF ROSE SHOOTS PROPAGATED IN VITRO

Author:   M. Podwyszynska
Abstract:
Microcuttings of the two miniature rose cultivars: difficult-to-root 'White Gem' and 'Starina' which is easy-to-root but showing early symptoms of leaf senescence and shoot-tip necrosis were chosen, as the model plants to the study. Rooting of cv. White Gem microcuttings was markedly enhanced from 10% to approximately 90% by the extension of the last subculture period from 6 to 10 weeks and selection of the shoots longer than 15 mm. In the case of cv. Starina, the inhibition of the leaf yellowing and shoot-tip necrosis was achieved through the elevation of Ca in MS medium. The raised level of Ca, Mg, Fe and Mn in MS medium markedly improved the quality of rose shoots.
