Abstract:
Fruit set following self- and cross-pollination was investigated by using 104 strains of Rosa rugosa collected from various habitats in Japan.
In self-pollination, the growth of pollen tube was inhibited in the style and no fruit set was observed.
In cross-pollination, however, pollen tubes grew to the base of the style and fruit set was observed at a frequency of 62.4%. These results suggest that R. rugosa is a gametophytic self-incompatible species like other Rosaceous plants.
