Abstract:
Agrobacterium tumefaciens is the pathogenic agent responsible for crown-gall.
This soil disease causes serious damage to the rose trees.
That is why a collection of rootstocks and botanical species of the genus Rosa were tested for their behaviour towards Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Distinctive cuttings were rooted in rockwool and inoculated by injury with a strain of Agrobacterium tumefaciens of strong or medium virulence.
The controls were only injured. 36 plants by cultivar/strain combination were spread out in a block-plot under controlled conditions.
Notations about gall presence/absence, gall size and dimensions of shoots were performed.
The results show a great variability in the response to inoculation.
Some rootstocks have an interesting behaviour that justifies the setting up of a rootstock selection program.
