POST PRODUCTION QUALITY OF POT ROSES: A RESULT OF INTERACTION BETWEEN CULTIVAR, POST-PRODUCTION CONDITIONS AND NUMBERS OF OPEN FLOWERS AT THE TIME OF SALE

Authors:   L. Høver, K. Borch, M.H. Williams
Abstract:
The Department of Ornamentals has formed a collaborative project with the Danish breeding firm Poulsen Roses ApS aimed at trademarking potted miniature roses which meet a specified high post-production quality (Borch, 1993 and Høyer et al., 1994). When comparing and grading the post-production quality of a crop it is important to have an experimental system that makes it possible to compare both cultivar and growing conditions.

Post production evaluation of potted roses depends on cultivar (Cushman et al., 1994, Nell and Noordegraaf, 1991), growing conditions (Høyer et al., 1994), floral developmental stage at sale (Cushman et al. 1994), simulated shipping conditions (Clark et al., 1991, Cushman et al., 1994, Nell and Noordegraaf, 1991, 1992), evaluation conditions (Serek and Andersen, 1993, Nell and Noordegraaf, 1991, 1992) and method of measuring the plant response.

This paper evaluates the interaction between 3 Parade® rose cultivars, length of simulated transport and number of open flowers at the time of sale.
