EFFECT OF ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY AND SUPPLY RATE OF THE NUTRIENT SOLUTION ON STOMATAL CONDUCTANCE OF ROSE PLANT LEAVES

Abstract:
An EC of 4.5 mS cm-1 associated to a low supply rate (characterized by a drainage rate of less than 10%) had the effect of closing the stomata of rose plants cv.
Sonia.
A high supply rate (drainage rate of around 50%) helped to overcome this negative effect.
Our hypothesis is that partial closing of the stomata is not, in the usual growing conditions, caused by the average salinity of the nutrient solution but by ionic gradients which arise when the amount of nutrient elements supplied exceeds the instantaneous demand of the plants.
The probable positive effect of a high supply rate is to help to reduce these salinity gradients by favouring ionic convection in the substrate.
