A QUICK METHOD TO DETERMINE THE MECHANICAL CONDITION OF CARROT ROOTS

Author:   K.A. Golacki
Keywords:   compression, elasticity, viscosity, water potential
Abstract:
An attempt to verify the force of compression as a parameter for a quick method of estimating the physical condition of carrot roots is presented. Mechanical properties of the roots were described by the Maxwell's modified model with regard to shape of a sample, direction of its load and the deformation speed. The dependence between reaction force of a sample on constant deformation and parameters like: modulus of elasticity, coefficient of viscosity and water potential were determined. The reaction force proved suitable to describe physical status of the roots.
