SENSING MOISTURE IN SOILS AND SUBSTRATES

Authors:   K. Schurer, Max A. Hilhorst
Abstract:
Of the many methods applied to the measurement of soil moisture two have recently gained special interest. Both employ the measurement of dielectric properties of the soil. Time domain reflectometry, TDR, measures the propagation of a short electrical pulse through the medium, the frequency domain method, FD, measures the static impedance between a set of electrodes. A newly developed integrated circuit for FD measurements is described, together with two examples of sensors. TDR and FD sensors have been tested in different soils. Their behavior is compared with the response given by Topp. Both sensors show the predicted deviations from the Topp-curve.
