Abstract:
To decrease the leaching of chemicals to ground water and surface water, different methods for measuring the water content of a soil were compared to test their suitability for use by greenhouse growers.
On four different sites five Frequency-Domain probes (FD) and five Time-Domain Reflectance probes (TDR) were placed at five depth-levels with a 10 cm interval, all measuring the dielectric constant of the soil.
On the same spots two tensiometers were placed at two depth.
Measurement data were collected with a computer.
Preliminary results will be presented about the reaction of the sensors on the different sites and depth-levels on watering the soil by sprinkler irrigation.
Experiments are carried out in a cold greenhouse climate growing lettuce in winter and in a fairly hot climate growing cucumbers in summer.
