Abstract:
To facilitate the use of new sensors and mathematical models for biological process control in greenhouses a portable measurement environment called "the Plants-On-Line Box" (the POL-box) was constructed.
The system consisted of a closed transparent polycarbonate box that allowed measurements of climate and whole plant photosynthesis.
Inside the box, air temperature, irradiance, relative humidity, CO2 concentration, and CO2 injection rate were measured and controlled.
A connected PC running software developed by the project collected data from sensors, performed climate control, stored all data in a Paradox database, managed different experiments, calculated photosynthesis, and displayed all results in real time by means of a graphical user interface.
New sensors and mathematical models were easily integrated.
Alternative applications of the POL-box are discussed.
