ISHS Acta Horticulturae 421: II International Symposium On Sensors in Horticulture

Preface

Abstract:
The first international workshop on sensors in horticulture was held in The Netherlands in January 1991, and organized by Ing. Th. H. Gieling from the Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering (IMAG-DLO) in Wageningen. Following the workshop, a discussion revealed a demand for a continuation of this initiative.

With the purpose of establishing a continuation, I was asked to convene a second event. Although the first workshop was very successful, it was felt that a change of form to a symposium might provide some advances in broadening the range of topics and potential participants. This symposium is hence the second event in the continuation, and named the 2. International Symposium on Sensors in Horticulture, although, strictly speaking, it is the first symposium of it kind.

The symposium site was Tune Landboskole, an agricultural college and congress centre some 25 km southwest of Copenhagen Centre. There were 46 participants. Including 6 members of the organizing committee.

The symposium started on Wednesday, 23. August with an opening session containing a welcoming address of the Vice-Chancellor of the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, followed by an invited presentation by Ing. Theo H. Gieling. The rest of the day and Friday 25. August was used for presentations. The total number of oral presentations was 24. Thursday morning focussed on the posters, of which there were nine. Each poster was introduced in the plenum by a short, oral presentation. Other activities included two technical tours on Thursday afternoon and on Saturday, and a commercial display, during which two companies displayed their products.

I would like to thank first of all Ing. Theo H. Gieling, who not only started the series of events, but also provided a considerable support to this symposium, especially as chairman of the International Programme Committee. Theo Gieling is also the editor of these proceedings together with Ing. Wim van Meurs, a contribution which is greatly acknowledged. Further, I would like to thank the members of the organizing committee for the time and effort they spend, putting together the symposium. Also, my thanks to the International Programme Committee for refereeing the papers. Finally, My thanks to the participants, without whom such an event is not possible.

Acknowledgment should also be made to ISHS and EurAgEng for sponsorship, and to my colleagues, faculty and staff, of the Section of Agricultural Engineering.
