Abstract:
The climatic conditions in Israel are favourable for Leucospermum growth, but most of its species are sensitive to the high pH of Israeli soils. Ls. patersonii is tolerant to high pH and is the only species which is commercially grown in Israel.
In our breeding program, Ls. patersonii was crossed with the vigorous but pH sensitive Ls. conocarpodendron. The hybrids obtained were vigorous and tolerant to high pH soils.
Seventeen of the hybrid plants are described and five of them were released as new cultivars.
