INTERSPECIFIC HYBRIDIZATION OF ALSTROEMERIA

Author:   K. Kristlansen
Abstract:
The Alstroemeria cultivars produced as cut flowers are all interspecific hybrids including only relatively few species. The aim of the present experiments was to optimize methods for production of a large number of different hybrids. It has been possible to obtain viable hybrids between a large number of Alstroemeria species by the use of ovule culture. Most of the hybrids were male sterile, but hybrids from some combinations were highly fertile. The percentage of germinating ovules increased with increasing age of ovules at time of incubation and it was possible to cross throughout the year. Pollen from most species could be stored for at least three month at 5°C and low humidity.
