ISHS Acta Horticulturae 420: Ornamental Plant Improvement: Classical and Molecular

FOREWORD

Author:   A. Vainstein
Abstract:
The XVIIIth EUCARPIA symposium, section ornamentals, was held last spring in Tel Aviv, Israel. The beachfront location and sunny weather contributed to a very warm atmosphere at the meeting, which brought together scientists from universities, research institutes and companies. Over 130 participants from America, Australia, Asia, Africa and Europe discussed various aspects of creating new ornamental plants with improved characteristics. Both traditional and molecular approaches, including those with potential future applications, to introducing new traits into ornamentals were extensively covered. Most of the symposium's oral and poster presentations are contained in this volume of Acta Horiculturae.

I wish to thank the organizing committee, all the participants and many others without whose help the symposium would not have been such a pleasant and enlightening event. I would also very much like to thank the following sponsors who contributed generously to the success of the symposium: Bio Lab Laboratories; Danziger “Dan” Flower Farm; Eisenberg Brothers Ltd.; Eldan Electronic Instrument Co. Ltd.; EUCARPIA; Hadar Nurseries; Hishtil; Ministry of Agriculture, Chief Scientist's Office; Ministry of Science and Fine Arts; Mizpor Ltd. Propagation Nurseries; Nir Nurseries; R. Shemi Ltd. Carnation Plants and Flowers; The Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities; The Production and Marketing Board of Ornamental Plants of Israel; Yissum Research Development Co. of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem; Yuval Agriculture Products Ltd.

I hope to see all of you again at the next symposium,

Alexander Vainstein
Convener
