SURVEY OF THE EVOLUTION OF PROTECTED CULTIVATION OF VEGETABLES IN THE FRENCH MEDITERRANEAN REGIONS |

| Abstract:
In the French mediterranean regions (Provence, Côte d'Azur, Languedoc, Rousillon) protected cultivation of vegetables (glasshouse and high plastic shelters) has increased from 60 ha in 1965 to 880 ha in 1973; 1.200 ha are forecast for 1975; high plastic shelters and tunnels cover 10 times more surface than glasshouses. The structure and evolution of the various holdings are studied. In 1973, about one thousand farms each have more than 2.500 m2 of shelter. The advantages and defects of various types of shelters are presented. In 1973, the most important species grown under shelter are: lettuce 360 ha, tomato 450 ha, sweet pepper 90 ha, melon 80 ha. The consequences of the development of protected cultivation are examined: Structures of the farms, calendars of production, relations between farmers and industry. | |
