ISHS Acta Horticulturae 42: Symposium on Cultivation of Vegetables under Protection in the Mediterranean Regions

ALL-YEAR-ROUND VEGETABLE PRODUCTION WITHOUT PROTECTION AND FUTURE PROSPECTS IN SOUTH AFRICA

Author:   O.J. Olivier
Abstract:
A survey has shown that South Africa is selfsufficient in vegetables - all produced in the open throughout the year. Three important production regions were studied and the results showed that the Lowveld is particularly suitable for "summer" crops in winter without protection and the Middleveld for early in-season production. The Western Cape Province with its Mediterranean climate is far the all-year-round production area of the Transvaal and protection will probably first find a foothold there.

The cold nights and warm sunny days in autumn, winter and spring makes fully controlled protection necessary in the Middleveld. It is suggested that umbrella-types of shelters against hail and prolonged rains in summer may find a place there.
