TOPBUDDING OF P. TEREBINTHUS L. ROOTSTOCKS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN REGION OF TURKEY |

| Abstract:
Pistachio orchards have been established at certain altitudes on the uplands of the Mediterranean Region by topworking of wild pistachios. In a top-budding study, T, chip and patch budding techniques were performed on P. terebinthus L. rootstocks at certain intervals to extend the budding period. Chip budding had the longest budding period, from April to November. The budding success rates with chip budding were over an average of 80 % both in the April-May period and in the mid August-late September period for upland topworking studies. T budding gave sufficient budding success rates only in a rather short budding period in summer, from mid June to mid July. Patch budding was found unsuccessful. Chip budding could be performed on rootstocks not larger than 4 cm in diameter, while T budding was found convenient in large ones. The vigorous shoots were obtained from the rootstocks that were chipbudded early in spring. The varieties of Siirt and Ohadi, when chipbudded in early spring on certain rootstocks, fruited after 2 years of budding. | |
