THE MORPHOLOGY OF POLLEN GRAINS AS AN INDICATOR FOR IDENTIFICATION OF MALE PISTACHIO (PISTACIA VERA. L.) TREES

Authors:   G.H. Davarynejad, M.H. Rashed, A. Vatanpoor, F. Csillag
Abstract:
The morphology of pollen grains of 14 Iranian male pistachio were examined by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Pollen grains were collected from Kerman, Iran. Dehydrated specimens were critical - point freeze dried, coated with gold and examined by Scanning Electron Microscope, at the Horticulture and Food Industry University of Budapest, Hungary.

The results indicated the general shape of all examined pistachio pollen grains were circular to elliptical with 20 – 24 um in diameter. Pollen grains were polypantaporate and intectate (apparently pillate to clavate). The sculpturing feature showed different exine structures associated with different varieties. In this paper different aspects of pollen morphology are discussed.
