ISHS Acta Horticulturae 419: I International Symposium on Pistachio

PREFACE

Author:   Prof. Dr. Nurettin KASKA
Abstract:
It is a great pleasure for me as the convener to welcome you to the First International Pistachio Nut symposium. By this occasion we were able to gather most of the scientists who work on pistachio nut for the first time in the world here in Adana. Pistachio nut is one of the most valuable nut and it is grown only in a few country.. However, the distribution of wild species of Pistacia is widespread in all the Middle East and Mediterranean countries. One of the most important feature about Pistacia genus in that almost all the plants of different species can be used as rootstock for pistachio nut. This gives a great opportunity to the countries who have wild trees or bushes of these genus to topwork. Only in Turkey the number of wild trees was estimated to be about 65 to 70 millions which is of course a natural richness for this country. Same view is applicable to the other countries who have such wild trees or shrubs. On the other hand pistachio nut can be grown in dry areas, poor soils, rocky, stony and calcareous soils. This is a unique opportunity for all the North African, Middle East, Australia, etc. to convert the deserts into green orchards.

Today pistachio nut is grown scientifically in the U.S.A. and traditionally in Iran, Turkey, Syria and Tunisia. There are efforts to combine modern and traditional pistachio growing methods in Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey etc. Since almost all the top scientists of pistachio nut are here, there will be a good opportunity to meet each other, to hear what kind of researches they have done in their country, to exchange views, to learn their experiences and to give informations and ideas to the young researchers.

I am thankful to FAO and its Representative Dr. Menini for supporting our Symposium and I am also grateful to the Governments of U.S.A. Iran, Italy, Spain and Greece for sending quite a good number of scientists to our Symposium. All these and other scientists are going to present valuable papers on different aspects of pistachio nut growing I hope these knowledges will be beneficial for all the pistachio growing countries.
