A KNOWLEDGE-BASED SYSTEM FOR REPRESENTING STRUCTURE FUNCTION RELATIONSHIPS OF WALNUT

Authors:   S. Le Dizès, P. Jacquet, P. Cruiziat
Abstract:
The INCA system is a knowledge-based system for integrating architectural and physiological knowledge about walnut trees. It allows a large number of known facts to be managed and organized. At the same time, it associates qualitative and quantitative information about the biological system.

Its architecture and most important features are briefly reviewed in this paper to report how physiological knowledge is represented. The overall objective of INCA is to run actual simulation of the dynamic evolution of the tree under given environmental conditions. It is also intended for researchers to assist them in their research tasks, with respect to existing knowledge corpus concerning the physiology of walnut trees. This approach should also be a helpful tool for a rational understanding of pruning practice and, thereby, aid decision making by the pruner.
