ISHS Acta Horticulturae 415: VIII International Asparagus Symposium

PROPOSED PLANTING AND PRODUCTION CYCLE OF ASPARAGUS FOR ECUADOR

Author:   A. Krarup
Abstract:
As of 1992 Ecuador has about 900 hectares of asparagus planted at altitudes of 2500 to 3500 meters above sea level, and this area will increase in future. Export of green fresh asparagus is the main aim.

Due to the climatic conditions of the sierra, which has a temperature range of 5 – 21°C, and an annual rainfall of 800 to 900 mm of water, the asparagus plants stay green the year round and have no natural recess. These conditions permit harvesting any time of the year.

According to market prices, the choice is to harvest twice a year, in July (30 days) and in December-January (60 days), which provides enough recovering time for the plants between harvests.

The proposed cycle of planting and production is presented as a diagram.
