ISHS Acta Horticulturae 415: VIII International Asparagus Symposium

IMPROVEMENT OF DANISH ASPARAGUS CULTIVARS

Author:   L. Sørensen
Abstract:
Cultivation of green asparagus is limited in Denmark due to low yields and highly variable spear quality. The cultivars grown must be adapted to cool climatical conditions and produce pure green spears which is a market demand. Evaluation of asparagus cultivars showed that the most suited cultivar for production of green asparagus in Denmark was ‘Aarslev no. 270’, bred at Department of Vegetables, Aarslev. Being a clonal hybrid variation between plants exists and can be utilized to improve the cultivar. A project was started in 1993 with the objective to improve ‘Aarslev no. 270’ by selection of parent plants and propagation by somatic embryogenese.
