ISHS Acta Horticulturae 415: VIII International Asparagus Symposium

MICHIGAN ASPARAGUS CLONE TRIAL

Authors:   J. Smeenk, T. Ball, K.C. Sink
Abstract:
Outstanding male or female plants were identified in established Michigan asparagus fields, the MSU germplasm or variety trials, or provided by commercial sources to the project. Spear tissues were removed to micropropagate the single crown selections. Due to varying degrees of micropropagation success the necessary 96 plants of each line were made available over a three year period. Five, 37, and 24 lines were planted in the field in 1988, 1989, and 1991, respectively. The trials consist of four replications of 12 plants each at two locations. Yield and quality data have been analyzed for harvests made from the 1988 and 1989 plantings. There are significant differences in yield and quality between some of the clones in the trial.
