EVALUATION OF NORFLURAZON FOR THE CONTROL OF YELLOW NUTSEDGE (CYPERUS ESCULENTUS) IN ESTABLISHED ASPARAGUS |

| Abstract:
In a three year experiment, norflurazon at three rates effectively controlled yellow nutsedge. The experiment was conducted on a Metz soil with 57% sand, 27% silt, 16% clay and 0.9% organic matter. The asparagus variety was U.C. 157, grown under sprinkler irrigation. Herbicide applications were made during winter dormancy at 2.2, 4.4 and 8.8 kg a.i./ha. Applications were made to the soil surface, followed by irrigation. Yellow nutsedge control following the first year of application was 42% for the lowest rate, 60% for the middle rate and 72% for the high rate. Two years of application resulted in 68%, 75%, and 92% control for the respective rates of norflurazon. The highest rate of norflurazon significantly increased asparagus yield in the second year of application. After the third year of treatment, control of yellow nutsedge was 82%, 95%, and 99% from the three norflurazon rates respectively. In the third year all but the lowest rate significantly increased yield over the untreated control. | |
