ASPARAGUS PRODUCTION IN MEXICO

Abstract:
Mexico has a highly developed vegetable production and export market. Most vegetables and fruits, with the exception of certain tropical fruits, may be produced in some geographic area during twelve months of the year. Production and quantity of produce exported is dictated by the available domestic supply of the import countries, particularly the United States and Canada. Asparagus is an important export crop at present, being grown in three major regions during most of the year. Total acreage is approximately 8,000 hectares. Further acreage development has been discouraged because of the high United States import tax. The proposed North American Free Trade Agreement between Mexico, Canada, and the United States may reduce export costs which would create a greater demand for asparagus acreage. Costs and cultural problems associated with asparagus culture are discussed.
