CARBON DIOXIDE EXCHANGE CHARACTERISTICS AND RELATIVE GROWTH RATES OF TWO ASPARAGUS CULTIVARS IN RELATION TO TEMPERATURE

Abstract:
Relative growth rate(RGR) and carbohydrate partitioning characteristics of two asparagus cultivars grown at various temperatures indicated that net photosynthetic(Pn) rate may differ between cultivars. CO2 exchange characteristics of the cultivars were therefore determined using closed system techniques to estimate Pn, dark respiration and photorespiration at temperatures from 20 to 40C. Assimilation versus internal CO2 exchange curves were also generated to further characterize CO2 exchange and associated limitations.

The cool climate cultivar ‘Larac’ had the highest RGR and Pn at 20C while ‘Brocks’ performed better at a day/night temperature of 35/15C. Differences in Pn appeared to be due to the accumulation of small differences in carboxylation efficiency, stomatal limitation and fern respiration rate.
