ISHS Acta Horticulturae 415: VIII International Asparagus Symposium

ADVANCES IN ASPARAGUS BREEDING FOLLOWING IN VITRO ANTHER CULTURE

Authors:   A. Falavigna, P.E. Casali, M.G. Tacconi
Abstract:
During the last 17 years, in vitro anther culture technique has been applied in a longterm breeding program of asparagus. The evaluation of 1400 double haploid (DH) anther-derived clones occured in soil infected by Fusarium. Moderate stresses to the plants occurred due to the pathogenicity of the Fusarium. During a period of at least three years the observations on morphological traits, plant mortality, resistence to rust and Stemphylium, allowed selection of 26 female and 12 male (DH) clones. Those were utilized as parents of 256 all-male F1 hybrids. The hybrids were evaluated in comparative field trials carried out in different locations and years. On the basis of the results obtained, 7 F1 hybrids named Argo, Eros, Gladio, Golia, Marte, Ringo and Sirio were selected and released to Italian seed companies which recently started the commercial seed production.
