ASPARAGUS CULTIVAR EVALUATION IN THE SACRAMENTO-SAN JOAQUIN DELTA REGION OF CALIFORNIA

Authors:   Robert J. Mullen, T.C. Viss, R. Chavarria, R.K. Reeder, R.W. Whitely
Abstract:
For the past five full harvest seasons, data on asparagus yield, spear number and spear weight have been collected on an international cultivar/private breeder line trial on Roberts Island in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Region of California. Of the 37 replicated lines evaluated, highest yields of marketable 23 cm spears was achieved by Jersey Giant (6,263 Kg/ha), followed by B-29, Gym Lim, B-7, Apollo, Atlas, UC 157, and Tainan No. 1. Highest spear quality belonged to UC 157, followed by Apollo, B-29, B-45, and Atlas. Average spear weight of the leading asparagus lines ranged from 23 grams (UC 157) to 32 grams (Atlas).

Two new asparagus trials contain lines from the University of California, Rutgers University, and a private breeder. During the 1993 season, best production in both trials occurred with Greenwich. RF110 x M138 and Apollo yielded consistently well in both trials. Some varieties (Jersey Giant, F609 x M138, UC 157, F189 x HS104 and F189 x HS 185) performed very well in one location but dropped off in the other, demonstrating both geographical and soil type variation. Best spear quality in these trials occurred with UC 157, Apollo, RF110 x M138, F609 x M138, F597 x M138 and Ida Lea.
