Abstract:
Asparagus growing increased in popularity in Europe in the sixteenth century.
It is probable that by this time some selection had begun.
Populations selected in important regions of asparagus production were named after countries, regions, and towns.
Many such names mentioned in books published in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
The first population that gained international importance was undoubtedly Violet Dutch also known under other names in different countries.
The majority of asparagus cultivars later bred throughout the world had their origin in Violet Dutch.
Also Mary Washington, which represents an outstanding achievement in the breeding of asparagus, originated partly from that cultivar.
The pedigrees of major asparagus cultivars of historical and current commercial importance as well as breeding methods are presented in the paper.
