ISHS Acta Horticulturae 414: International Symposium on the Genus Lilium

EFFECT OF HARVEST STAGE, PRE- AND POST-HARVEST TREATMENT ON LONGEVITY OF CUT LILIUM FLOWERS

Authors:   A. Lee, J. Suh
Abstract:
For Lilium Mid-Century hybrid 'Enchantment', the longevity of 1st and 2nd flower were increased when stems were harvested 4 days before anthesis were pre-treated with STS and holding solution (AgNO3 + sucrose) for 24 hours. Flowers that failed to open or rolling in an edge of petals and sepals were observed in control and stored for 5 days. For Lilium oriental hybrid 'Stargazer', STS pretreatment was not effective on the longevity of cut flower, but flower colour became deep-red by STS pretreatment and holding solution treatment. For Lilium longiflorum hybrid 'Jinsil', harvest at mature stage extended vase life about 1.5 times longer than harvest at immature stage, and holding solution treatment extended vase life about 2 times longer than control. Number of bacteria in stem tissue after holding solution treatment were markedly reduced than that of control. Therefore, systematic and general management are very important in connection with harvest stage, pretreatment, holding solution and storage conditions in Lilium species to extend vase life and improve the quality of cut flower.
